Interactive Long-Term Planning

CHALLENGE

Lafarge is a world leader in building materials, with operations in 64 countries and the accompanying requirements for technology infrastructure.

When their existing technology platform presented availability and scalability challenges, the technology infrastructure group was tasked with a feasibility study for a new multi-continent technology infrastructure strategy.

These factors and the resulting decision-making process needed to be clearly communicated to a set of executive stakeholders with a variety of backgrounds in a clear and impactful manner, providing a strong overview with the ability to drill into technical detail as required.

SOLUTION

In order to  guide and communicate a complex decision-making and evaluation process, Perceptual worked with Lafarge’s Director of Global Enterprise Architecture to design and develop an interactive three-dimensional visualization and scenario modeling system.

This was designed and developed to enable key decision makers of various backgrounds to come to a common understanding of complex technological, environmental, and political factors.

A simple interface allowed RFP respondent data to be directly inputted by vendors in an online environment.  This vendor data was then evaluated and visualized at three levels, with a global view of the Americas, then city level views and finally the details of individual data centers including Green Computing initiatives.

“Interactive visualization was effective at both guiding the decision-making process, and driving the conversation with senior executive stakeholders”, said Brent Wolfram, Director of Global Enterprise Architecture,  “It was helpful to be able to show the overall plan, yet be able to drill into specific technical details when needed.”

The system provided a clear framework for the evaluation of complex data across a consistent set of metrics. Senior stakeholders were interactively walked through the decision-making process in a clear visual manner, facilitating both understanding and buy-in while incorporating stakeholder input.

The technology infrastructure plan was successfully rolled out, with a clear vision and roadmap covering global technology infrastructure requirements for the next decade.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Perceptual Interactive Visualization distills and clarifies complex information environments enabling clear stakeholder decision-making and communication.

Complex new initiatives can be difficult to evaluate and communicate, especially to a non-technical or mixed background stakeholder group.

Perceptual Interactive Visualization goes beyond communication to driving conversation, engaging and enabling stakeholder comprehension and feedback to increase the acceptance and success of an initiative.
