CHALLENGE

OCAD University Strategic Innovation Lab (sLab) is an academic centre of excellence focused on applying strategic foresight and design thinking to envision possible futures and drive innovation process.

As part of its Imagining Canada's Future strategic initiative, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) framed a series of regional panels, each of which would identify a set of top ten challenges over the next 30 years, to which Canada's social sciences & humanities community could respond. Led by sLab, a group of universities located in the Southern Ontario region formed a project team, and selected an urbanization theme to enhance the focus of the problematique.

The project was led by sLab Senior Researchers Dr. Peter Jones, Suzanne Stein, and Greg Van Alstyne, with Research Assistants Uma Maharaj, Peg Lahn, Kathryn Black, and Perceptual Principal Petri Tanninen.

After a successful panel workshop revealed interesting possible future challenges and opportunities, sLab wished to communicate both the results and the process in an engaging manner on its website research findings page.

SOLUTION

In order to  communicate the panel findings and process in an informative and intuitive manner, Perceptual interactive visualization process was applied in close collaboration with sLab faculty to design an online interactive step-by-step visualization that walked the viewer through the engagement.

The visualization takes the viewer through the generation of challenges, the process of clustering and voting to reveal the most significant findings, and finally merging and editing for a final set of ten interdependent possible future challenges from increasing urbanization.

The viewer can in this way understand not only the results, the future possible challenges, but the collaborative and structured process that led to these results, as well as the thinking behind it.

“The collaborative process resulted in a positive outcome that improved the project communication experience“, said Greg Van Alstyne, Director of sLab. “Being able to include interactive visualization in our online findings really helps our readers to understand the complex process driving our results.”

The Interactive Visualization of the findings from the Southern Ontario Panel on Urbanization was launched on the Findings page of the research project website.

The Interactive Visualization was well received and forms a portion of the final online publication of the project communications page.

“The collaborative process resulted in a positive outcome that improved the project communication experience“, said Greg Van Alstyne, Director of sLab. “Being able to include interactive visualization in our online findings really helps our readers to understand the complex process driving our results.”
